May worked in the Civil Service as an executive officer for 14 years, and then moved on to the voluntary and not-for-profit sectors. Her work involved working with refugees and asylum seekers who needed help and support.
May became involved with Conflict and Change in 1995 when she trained as a mediator and became a volunteer, joining the management committee in 2009. She has been involved with Conflict and Change in various other capacities and was employed for a period of time as the community development worker in 2007, when the regular post holder was away.
May was born in Manchester and spent part of her childhood in Sierra Leone. During a break in her career she went to the US where she attended Queens University, in Charlotte, North Carolina, and studied Organisational Communications. May also trained as a volunteer for Victim Support, receiving advanced training in supporting victims bereaved through murder. Last year May trained as a mentor for recovering drug users.
May is currently employed by the United Kingdom Border Agency at Heathrow Airport and lives in Forest Gate. May’s hobbies include reading, travelling, meeting new people, and organising events.
