Conflict and Change

We began as the UK's first community mediation organisation in 1984, and we are now engaged in four main areas of work:

Volunteers

Volunteers are vital members of our Conflict and Change team. Our volunteers are a microcosm of the communities of Newham itself with 25 languages between them! Part of the richness offered to and contributed by our volunteers comes from working together across ethnic and faith differences. We hope to model our vision for the whole of the community on these relationships built within Conflict and Change.

History

Conflict and Change was established in 1984 as a response to the social tensions arising from economic change and population shift.

Newham was wrestling hard with the communities undergoing rapid cultural, social and economic change, and there was little going on to help people understand what was happening. Our idea was that if enough people in the community could intervene at an early enough stage, conflict could be channeled away from violence and into something more constructive."
