Raising funds for the community from the community

In the spring of 2010 a small group of our volunteers joined together with the aim of using their links within the community to raise money for Conflict & Change. Helen Finch, a management committee member and volunteer who is coordinating the group, says: “We want the pot of money we raise to give the staff team more freedom to put new ideas into action and to respond quickly to emerging needs within the community."

We are currently planning a number of fundraising appeals and activities that we’ll be launching over the rest of 2010 including:

  • Encouraging and supporting people to do sponsored activities for Conflict & Change
  • Running a tombola at the AGM in October
  • Hosting fundraising suppers for friends and neighbours
  • Organising yard sales in our streets

If you'd like to get involved, or if you have any fundraising experience or ideas, please get in touch with Helen on helen@conflictandchange.co.uk. She'd be happy to hear from you!

Fantastic fundraising examples - Credit Crunch Yard Sale, East Ham (2009)

C&C Volunteer Dolores and her husband Gordon, who have lived in East Ham for 8 years, organised a Credit Crunch Yard Sale at their home in September 2009 to raise money for Conflict & Change's work in the local area.

They received donations from neighbours and friends, including an 8 year boy called Raoul who donated most of his toys to help raise money for charity - including most of his Action Man and Power Rangers! As well as getting wonderful bargains, neighbours got the opportunity to meet each other and chat. The event was great fun!

Yard sales are very popular in Dolores and Gordon's home country, Canada, inspiring them to hold their first on in London in 2007. Due to the popularity, novelty and requests by the people in the neighbourhood they have made it an annual event. This year Dolores and Gordon raised an amazing £1000 and to add icing on the cake, Gordon’s employer, the Royal Bank of Scotland, is generously matching the sum with a further £1000. This brings their fundraising total to a massive £3000 so far for Conflict and Change! Several neighbours told them at the weekend that they look forward to the yard sale and one mum said her kids got up early so they could come to the event and get some deals.
