We attended a series of events organised by NVSC faith worker Becci Fry, held in East Ham, Forest Gate, Manor Park and Beckton. They were organised for women of all faiths and communities and called Women in Newham Together. We ran workshops on bridge building, and staffed a stall. The workshop at the Froud Centre in Manor Park was very well attended. A mixed group of women participated, and many of them came to later workshops.
We held five workshops called How can we all get along in Canning
Town? in June, July and August 2007 and thirty two diverse Canning Town
residents came along. We spent many hours talking to people on the
streets and heard a wide cross section of Canning Town voices. Those
that were brave enough to come along (it takes courage!) found it a
valuable and enjoyable experience.
Here are some comments:
"I never knew that all these other communities
cared about the same things as me. I thought it was just us"
"I can't
believe we have never met or spoken before - we live in the same
block!"
"I think your daughter should definitely be able to wear a
cross at school" - Bengali Muslim woman to a white east end mother who
said she thought it unjust that the school would not let children wear
crosses.
"Please, please say hello to me if you see me - in case I don't
recognise you."
"We are all saying the same thing!"
We ran workshops in Community Road Centre in Stratford, on topics including environment, racism and safety.
