Woman in a man's world. 27th April. Letter of Appreciation

Dear all,

I would like to thank you for coming to the ‘Woman in a Man’s World’ event, Rasha was really touched by the level of enthusiasm and support from you all. Thank you very much for giving her such a warm welcome and making this event a great place to meet like minded people who are willing to share their life stories.

As you know, Rasha had a very busy week giving talks across London, from diverse audiences such as diaspora women’s groups, the young people we work with through our Truce project, Chatham House and numerous journalists. Everywhere she went people commented on her conviction and determination to make a real difference on the ground, and her strength as a woman.

Rasha had brought some photos with her from Sudan and we thought it would be nice for you to see few pics and some extra information about the work of ‘Collaborative for Peace’. Please click the link for pictures and stories of one of the interventions Rasha has been involved with, which led to peace between 5,000 people. It really demonstrates the impact that her work has – and the how much community can achieve when they lead with their own hands.

Peer Mediation Away Day

A day by the sea

February saw twenty seven Newham Peer Mediators, from 5 schools, pile onto the coach heading for Essex, to celebrate and spend the day with other young students that act as mediators in their schools.

Since 1984 Conflict & Change have worked with children and young people, training them in non-violent conflict resolution and communication skills and establishing them as peer mediators in their local schools.

Since April last year we have trained 99 students in 7 Primary schools as peer mediators. Following our training the children with the support of a Learning mentor, set up Mediation schemes. They have volunteered at lunch times to mediate arguments and disagreements between their peers on the playground.

Let's talk about our Road. Community Conversation

On 10th April a group of our neighbours living at Streatfeild Avenue came along to meet other neighbours and talk about what it feels like living here and what their hopes, ideas, concerns are.
We were delighted that eight people came along and talked together, most for the very first time.  They were of of different ages and ethnicties and lived here for between 1 year and 34 years.   A very strong message that came through from everyone was that they were happy here and cared about the neighbourhood. At the same time they all had some ideas about making it better.
