Write a Letter to Support Mediation

Posted in

Help the decision makers in Newham council take notice by writing to them directly.

At the bottom of the page is a sample template letter and email that you could copy and paste, and personalise with your details or anything else you’d like to say.

Alternatively you could write a letter or email entirely of your own. Here are a few pointers you might like to include:

  • Say what your relationship with Conflict & Change is, and what you have benefited from it.
  • What would you like to change? Eg: That London Borough of Newham reconsiders its decision and extends commissioning of Conflict & Change’s community mediation service.
  • Conflict & Change has 25 years of expertise in community mediation and was the UK’s first service of this kind.
  • Conflict & Change works specifically in Newham, meaning it has an in-depth understanding of the kinds of conflict facing people in the area.
  • It has a diverse team of over 40 local mediators, representing over 25 language communities.
  • Since 2000, it has supported over 3600 people with the mediation process.
  • Over the last five years, 78% of community mediation cases had a positive outcome when both parties were willing.
  • Our community mediation work is deeply connected with Conflict & Change’s other community cohesion activities, giving our community outreach activities a unique edge.

Make sure you SIGN OUR PETITION! and read about other ways you can help promote our mediation service.

Re: Ending of commissioning for Conflict & Change community mediation service by London Borough of Newham

I am one of your constituents and am writing to you about the council’s recent decision to end commissioning of Conflict & Change (Reg. charity 295990), to provide community mediation services at the end of the financial year. Conflict & Change is a voluntary organisation that promotes community cohesion in Newham and that specialises in community and family mediation.

As an important local representative I ask that you encourage Newham Council to reconsider this decision and extend commissioning of Conflict & Change’s community mediation work in line with other local organisations who have received extensions of commissioning. I also ask that Conflict & Change may be made aware of any sources of interim discretionary funding that will enable this work to continue while LBN makes decisions about longer term commissioning.

Its community mediation work is sustainable, proven to be effective and is a well established, relied upon local service. Since 2000 Conflict & Change has supported over 3600 local people to resolve their problems through mediation. Over the past 5 years, 78% of community mediation cases have had a positive outcome when both parties were willing. Conflict & Change works with a team of local and extensively trained volunteers, ensuring the service is rooted in the area.

Last year Conflict & Change celebrated 25 years of working to build stronger relationships between people in Newham and has a solid reputation within the area. It has various activities, including education programmes with children and young people and the adults that work with them; free training for local residents in communication skills, conflict resolution and mediation; community development programmes that build trust, cooperation and understanding between diverse local residents, and community conversations that help people in an area get to know each other and open dialogue on difficult topics.

All of these activities were borne from Conflict & Change’s mediation work and they remain very closely interconnected, meaning ending commissioning on community mediation will also have significant reverberations on these other areas of work and the Newham residents that benefit from them.

I look forward to your support on this important matter.

Yours sincerely,
