Who we are
The community development team is made up of a diverse group working with local minority ethnic communities and faith groups as well as recent arrivals in Newham including those seeking asylum.
What we do
Our practical aims are:
- To learn from and develop existing peace building strategies.
- To understand the reasons for communication difficulties both within and between communities.
- To promote community based conflict resolution, including conflict resolution within families.
- To enhance understanding and respect of cultural difference.
How we work
We work towards achieving these aims by:
- Listening and learning from communities about their conflicts and constructive ways of dealing with them.
- Building on these methods through training workshops in peace building and conflict resolution skills.
Examples of our Work
Highlights of the last year include:
- Supporting the development of the Muslim Mediation Service
- Supporting the planning group for the annual Refugee Week Festival
- Staying Connected a book about the practice of conflict resolution in different communities
