Community Conversations - talking together in a safe, meaningful and positive way

Community Conversation event

The Community Conversations project is a fusion of our experience and skills in community development, mediation, training and facilitation.  We have a team of diverse facilitators, who are mainly volunteers, and most of them either live in Newham or have strong links with the borough.

We have developed a range of approaches to enable meaningful conversation between people of different backgrounds. In all Community Conversations we ensure that all voices are heard and all viewpoints and values are affirmed.

The project was initially a response to the community tensions within Newham following the London 7/7 bombings and our awareness that there were not spaces for dialogue between Muslims and non Muslims although there was so much say.  By the time we secured funding to pilot such a project, the tensions had largely subsided and it was not such a "hot" topic and so we looked for the topics that people in Newham did want to talk about.  We have found that people of all ages and backgrounds have a lot to say about the challenges of living in a diverse area with constant change and about how much belonging and togetherness (good old fashioned community spirit) matters to them.  We have found that people of all ages and from all cultures have a lot to say and a lot of feeling about the generation gap.  These and many other topics have emerged as things people want to talk about and the resulting Community Conversations have all been held between people from very different walks of life.  They have also been held among people who are likely to bump into each other again and so the conversations (and relationships) can continue.
